Young couple being intimateSexual activity is often associated with risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or unplanned pregnancy. However, consented sex also provides numerous health benefits to those who engage in it. Scientific evidence has supported that having sex activates the body to release feel-good hormones like dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin. These chemicals activate pleasure and reward centers in the brain, contributing to mood elevation, stress and tension relief, and feelings of love, trust, and intimacy. Furthermore, sex decreases cortisol and adrenaline, which are commonly called “stress hormones,” and this hormonal effect may protect people from depression and anxiety. In fact, people who regularly engage in consensual sex generally report being more satisfied with their mental health than those who refrain from sexual activity.

Sex can also act as an effective natural pain reliever due to the endorphins that are released during the act. These hormones have the ability to attach to the opiate receptors in the brain, thus blocking the sensation of pain. Consequently, many people report reduced pain after engaging in sexual activity, including pain from menstrual cramps, migraines, and some chronic pain conditions. Another health benefit that sex provides is better sleep. During sex, prolactin is released, which is a hormone that promotes relaxation in the body. This hormone may contribute to better sleep after having sex. On the flip side, consistently getting enough sleep can support a person’s sexual desire and sexual functioning. Lastly, sex can significantly impact a person’s intimate relationship quality. Engaging in sexual activities with a partner cultivates intimacy and closeness. Oxytocin is one of the hormones that is released during this activity and promotes bonding, whether it is romantic bonding or mother-infant bonding. In fact, oxytocin is released in large quantities in a woman’s body during labor, and it is integral in the bonding of a mother to her new baby. Together, these health benefits and more make sexual activity an important aspect of a person’s overall well-being.
